Hotel Jozef Idrija: Hotel Review
/Hotel Jožef was one of those stays that felt calm, easy, and genuinely welcoming.
Located in Idrija, surrounded by hills and greenery, the hotel makes a really convenient base if you’re exploring this part of Slovenia. It’s close to the town centre, sits near the Idrijca River, and has that peaceful small-town feeling that makes you slow down a little. The hotel is also just outside Idrija’s historic old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it works well if you want somewhere comfortable while still being close to the area’s heritage and nature.
What stood out most to us was how friendly the team were. It didn’t feel overly formal or staged - just warm, helpful, and easy from the moment we arrived.
The hotel itself is modern and comfortable, but still small enough to feel personal. With a relaxed restaurant, spacious rooms, surrounding greenery, and beautiful views across the hills, it was exactly the kind of stay we needed while travelling through Slovenia.
Location & Getting There
Hotel Jožef is located in Idrija, around 1 kilometre from the centre of town and right by the Idrijca River.
The location was super convenient for us because it gave us easy access to town while still feeling quiet and green. Idrija is a smaller destination, but it has a lot of character - historic streets, mining heritage, local food, and plenty of nature nearby.
It’s also a great stop if you’re road-tripping through Slovenia. You get the comfort of a proper hotel, free private parking, and enough space around the property to make it feel more relaxed than staying right in a busy centre.
The surrounding greenery was one of our favourite parts of the stay. Looking out towards the hills and trees made everything feel calm, especially after busy travel days.
Our Room
Our room at Hotel Jožef was spacious, bright, and really comfortable.
The design was simple and modern, with plenty of natural light and enough room to properly settle in. It wasn’t trying to be overly trendy or dramatic, but it had everything we needed for a relaxed stay.
We especially appreciated the space. After moving between different places in Slovenia, having a room that felt open and easy to unpack in made such a difference.
The views were also lovely, with greenery and hills around the hotel giving the room a much softer, more peaceful feel. It’s always nice when a hotel room gives you a sense of where you are, and here it really felt connected to Idrija’s quieter, natural surroundings.
The rooms at Hotel Jožef are modern and include features like air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, a minibar, safe, desk, and private bathroom facilities.
Dining at Restaurant Jožef
Dining was easily one of the biggest highlights of our stay.
Restaurant Jožef serves local specialities and has a strong connection to Idrija’s food culture. The hotel’s official site talks about the area’s mining and industrial heritage shaping local customs and cuisine, and that really came through in the meal.
We had an Idrijan dinner here, and honestly, it was amazing. The food felt hearty, comforting, and beautifully tied to the region. It was one of those meals that made the stay feel more memorable because it wasn’t just “hotel food” — it actually felt like a proper taste of where we were.
The restaurant is also known for traditional local dishes, including handmade Idrija žlikrofi paired with local wines. That’s exactly the kind of dining experience I love while travelling: local, generous, and full of character.
The setting was relaxed and welcoming too. It didn’t feel too stiff, but the food still felt carefully prepared. After a day exploring, it was so nice to have such a good restaurant right at the hotel.
Staff & Service
The staff at Hotel Jožef were genuinely lovely.
Everyone we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and warm, which made the stay feel even better. Sometimes smaller hotels really get this right because the service feels more personal, and that was definitely the case here.
From check-in to dinner and general questions during the stay, the team made everything feel easy. It’s the kind of hospitality that doesn’t need to be flashy — it just makes you feel welcome.
Final Verdict
Hotel Jožef is a great option if you’re visiting Idrija or road-tripping through this part of Slovenia.
The location is convenient, the staff are friendly, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the surrounding greenery gives the whole stay a calm, peaceful feeling.
But the standout for us was definitely the dinner. Restaurant Jožef gave us such a lovely introduction to Idrijan food, and it added so much to the overall experience.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, comfortable hotel in Idrija with warm service, beautiful views, and a really memorable local meal, Hotel Jožef is a lovely choice.
