Is Jet Boating in Wanaka Worth It? My Experience with Go Jets Wanaka
/Wanaka might be known for its slower, more relaxed vibe, but don’t let that fool you - there’s still plenty of adrenaline to be found here.
Jet boating is one of the most popular things to do, and after trying it with Go Jets Wanaka, I get the hype. It’s fast, fun, and just the right amount of chaos to shake up an otherwise chill day.
If you’re wondering whether it’s actually worth doing, here’s what it’s really like.
What is Go Jets Wanaka?
Go Jets Wanaka is a jet boat experience that runs along the Clutha River, just a short drive from town.
The ride goes for around an hour and includes:
High-speed cruising across open water
Tight turns and 360-degree spins
Scenic stretches with mountain views all around
What the Experience is Actually Like
It starts off fairly calm, cruising along the river - and then the speed kicks in.
You’re suddenly skimming across the water, weaving through the river, building up to those sharp spins. Thanks to our skipper, Pat - the 360s are easily the highlight - quick, smooth, and just the right level of thrill without being overwhelming.
What I liked most is that it never felt too intense. You’re not bracing yourself the whole time. Instead, it’s more like pure fun - you’re laughing, taking it all in, and actually enjoying the ride rather than just surviving it.
The setting makes a big difference too. The Clutha River is wide and open, so you’ve got space, views, and that sense of freedom rather than being hemmed in by canyon walls. The views are beautiful all round, so it’s a great mix of scenic beauty and adrenaline.
Is It Worth It?
Short answer – yes, definitely.
If you’re chasing something super extreme, this might feel a little more relaxed than you had in mind. Wanaka in general leans more easygoing fun, and this fits that energy perfectly.
But if you want something that is:
Fun and genuinely exciting
Easy to fit into your day
A good mix of adrenaline and scenery
Then it’s 100% worth it.
It’s one of those activities that adds a lot to your day without taking over your entire itinerary.
Who It is Best For
Go Jets Wanaka is a great fit if you:
Want a bit of adrenaline without going full extreme
Are travelling with friends or a partner
Prefer something fun and social
Have a packed schedule and want something efficient
It’s also a really good entry point if you’ve never done jet boating before. You get the full experience - speed, spins, excitement - without it feeling too full-on. This was our first jet boating experience – I happened to do it on my birthday, so I’ll always remember it!
Practical Tips Before You Go
A few quick things that will make your experience smoother:
Wear something you don’t mind getting a little wet
Bring a jacket if it’s cooler
Secure your sunglasses
Arrive early for the briefing
Sit on the sides if you want a slightly more exciting ride
Don’t bring your camera/other electronic equipment if it’s not waterproof – you will get splashed!!
The skipper will tell you when you’re about to spin, so pay attention
Hold on to the railing provided and keep your arms within the boat at all times
What Else is There to See in Wanaka?
Jet boating is a great way to add some energy to your day, but Wanaka itself is worth slowing down for as well.
One of the easiest stops is That Wanaka Tree, which is exactly what it sounds like - a single tree standing in the lake. It’s simple, but there’s something about it that just works, especially early in the morning or around sunset.
If you have a bit more time, head out towards Glendhu Bay. The drive alone is worth it, and once you’re there, it opens up into these wide lake views with mountains in the background. It feels quieter and a bit more removed from the main town.
For something quick and elevated, Beacon Point is an easy stop that gives you a great vantage point over the lake. It’s one of those places you can pull over, take it in for a few minutes, and keep moving.
If you’re after something a little different, Wanaka Lavender Farm is a nice change of pace. It’s more of a relaxed wander - gardens, farm animals, and a few photo spots - rather than a major attraction, but still a good option if you have time.
And if you’re just looking to slow things down, the Wanaka lakefront itself is enough. Grab a coffee, walk along the water, and take in the views - it doesn’t really need to be more complicated than that.
Final Thoughts
Jet boating in Wanaka is one of those activities that is so, so fun.
It’s a great way to add a bit of energy to your day without overcommitting. You get the adrenaline, the scenery, and a really good time all in one.
If you’re in Wanaka and want to do something a little different – Go Jets Wanaka is definitely worth it!
