Vianden Castle: Guide to Visiting [2024]

Deep in the small country of Luxembourg lays one of Europe’s best kept secrets. A fairytale setting, majestic architecture and storied history all harmoniously collide into Vianden Castle, a place so beautiful that you’ll hardly ever forget it.

Vianden Castle, Luxembourg

In January of 2022, I had the chance to visit Luxembourg - a country full of great surprises (seriously you should check out my blog post on why you need to be visiting Luxembourg right about now)!

I was very lucky to also be able to set aside a day for a day trip out of Luxembourg City, and visit Vianden Castle.

Where to stay in Vianden

Vianden is a quiet, sleepy town, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of great places to stay. When visiting Vianden Castle, be sure to stay at one of these accommodation options!

Budget: Youth Hostel Vianden

Youth Hostel Vianden is a great option for those who want to save money, but still have a good accommodation experience. Although it’s not going to break any boundaries with its no-frills approach to a hostel stay, it’s still popular with guests for a reason. The hostel has mixed, male and female rooms.

Mid-Range: Camping de L'Our Appartements

The Camping de L'Our Appartements are a great set of apartments nestled quietly in Vianden town. Feel at home here with the apartments’ comfortable interior and chalet atmosphere. Also - although we’ve categorised this in the ‘Mid-Range’ category, the apartments are actually quite inexpensive.

Luxury: Golf & Country Hotel - Clervaux

The closest luxury hotel to Vianden is the Golf & Country Hotel - Clervaux, which is in the neighboring town of Clervaux. Featuring an immaculate golf course and beautiful rooms, guests can treat themselves to a luxury experience when staying here.

Brief History of Vianden Castle

I’m going to keep this short because you’re going to learn so much more about the castle when you visit, but here’s a basic rundown.

Inside Vianden Castle

Inside Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is located at the north end of Luxembourg, and its origins can be traced all the way back to the 10th century. Over the 11th to 14th centuries, the castle was slowly constructed, with many parts being added or altered. Shortly after a mansion was added in the 17th century, the castle sadly fell into ruins, but has since been reconstructed to give it the façade that it has today.

The castle has a complex history involving nobility, confiscation, World War I & II, and years of restoration. In fact, the castle wasn’t completely restored until 1990.

Standing over 310m tall, the castle elegantly overlooks the quaint town of Vianden, which has a modest population of about 2,000 people.

How to get to Vianden Castle

If you’re reading this post, chances are that you’ll be trying to get to Vianden Castle from Luxembourg City. Luckily for you, Luxembourg’s public transport system is not only one of the most efficient in the world (in my opinion), but it’s also completely free to use.

The first thing you’ll want to do is use this website called Mobilitéitszentral to map out your journey. From Luxembourg City, there will be several ways to get to Vianden.

However, the most logical route will see you start at Luxembourg Gare Centrale (Luxembourg Main Station), where you’ll board a train headed for Ettelbruck, Gare. This journey will take about half an hour.

Inside Luxembourg Gare Centrale (Train Station)

From Ettelbruck, Gare, exit the train station and keep walking until you find the bus stops. From here, board Bus Number 570 headed towards Vianden, Gare and get off at this stop. From Vianden, Gare, walk about 10 minutes to the castle. This shouldn’t be a difficult walk, and you’ll be able to see the castle from the town anyway – so you won’t get lost.

All up, the journey will take about 1 hour and 10 minutes, one way.

What to see in and around Vianden Castle

Vianden Town

As you walk towards Vianden Castle, make sure you take it slow and also visit Vianden town’s attractions. Stroll through colourful and peaceful Altstadt Vianden, and pass by the Trinitarian Church.

If you’re visiting during the right season (usually every season except Winter – but please check seasonal times), you can take the scenic Vianden Chairlift

After that, you’ll be ready for the main event – Vianden Castle itself. Once you purchase tickets and are admitted, touring the castle is actually really easy. You’ll be taken on a round-trip circuit which will show you every part of the castle that can be visited.

This includes parts of the castle such as the Lower Chapel, Genealogy Hall, Courtyard, Arendt Hall and the Surrounding Walk and Chapel – which was my personal favourite part of the castle.

Vianden Castle Opening Hours and Admission Fee

Opening Hours

Vianden Castle is open every day from 10am, and usually closes between 4-6pm – but please check the official website for exact times.

Admission Fee

The Entrance Fee is 10EUR for Adults, 5EUR for students and 2.50EUR for children.

Entry is free for holders of the LuxembourgCard, though. The card (1 day, 1 person) is only 13 EUR, so this card pays off very quickly. I would highly recommend purchasing a card as it’ll save you a lot on entrance fees around the country.

The town of Vianden is a small one, so there’s not too many accommodation options – but here’s a few that I would recommend.

Budget: Café Hotel de ville de Bruxellesessentially an Inn with shared facilities, but highly comfortable rooms.

Mid-Range: Auberge Aal Veinen – family-run hotel with modern, comfortable rooms

High-Range: Auberge De L'Ourrecently refurbished hotel in a central location
